Are The Radicular Attacks A New Form Of Attack Of The Red Palm Weevil?

The Sospalm technical team has contemplated this type of attack since the beginning of the plague in Spain, in order to recommend an installation height of the Sospalm Peg, based on the species of palm.

The red weevil has a preference for attacking the bud of the palm tree (the area with the highest concentration of nutrients) as it is the only growth point of the palm tree. However, the flight that characterizes the Coleoptera Beetle on the majority of occasions provokes the lateral and basal attacks which can affect the stability of the palm trees in greater measure.

The male adult beetles release pheromones in order to attract the females to join them and to mate in the trees. These adult males, the first to leave the palm tree in which they are inhabiting, occasionally collide with the stipe, or trunk, of the palm tree and fall to the ground on their journey to the next palm, causing the Coleoptera to access the tree from the basal side, and making the Sospalm Pegs most affective in this area of the tree.

*In the species Phoenix Dactylifera and palms of the genus Washingtonia sp., we recommend carrying out the installations of the Sospalm Pegs as low to the ground as possible, because of the vulnerability of this area when facing the basal and lateral attacks. In this way we can better protect the trees, because the insecticide travels through the conductive vessels from the injection site to the bud.
