FOLIAR SHOWER WITH PESTICIDE

The foliar shower is the technique used in Phoenix canariensis to supply a volume of pesticide solution to the crown of the palm tree. The solution is applied without pressure, to favour the entrance of the insecticide through the perforations that the larvae have made. The volume to apply in a shower depends on the size of the crown. In very pruned palm trees, 10 to 15 liters is usually sufficient. In palm trees with many leaves, the volume can exceed 25 liters, while if the palm shows symptoms, this volume is usually exceeded. The insecticide solution should saturate the bud and must be applied in 3 different points to favour its penetration. When it starts to drip below the crown, it is a sign that it is saturated.

Foliar shower is only efficient to treat attacks on the bud, which is why it is widely used in Phoenix canariensis, since the attacks are usually to the upper part of the palm tree. This technique is not effective in Phoenix dactylifera Washingtonia and Cocoteros since lateral and basal attacks are very frequent..

The application must be carried out by experts, following the manufacturer’s recommendations:

Treatment frequency

  • Preventive Treatments: Make a shower every 45 to 60 days.
  • Curative treatments: Make showers every 30 days until symptoms disappear, then continue with the frequency of preventive treatments.
